Solar & Industrial Waste Heat
Storing heat that would otherwise be released unused
PCM thermal storage units capture surplus heat from solar collectors and industrial processes, then release it on demand for hot water, preheating and space heating.
The challenge
What makes temperature control difficult in this scenario
Supply and demand out of phase
Solar gain peaks at midday while hot water demand peaks in the early morning and evening, so energy is dumped when storage is unavailable.
Low-grade heat is hard to reuse
Waste heat below boiling point is often released to the atmosphere because water tanks are too large and lose temperature too quickly.
Technical approach
How phase change material is applied here
Higher storage density per volume
Latent heat storage in PCM holds more energy per unit volume than sensible heat in water at the same temperature range, reducing tank footprint.
Narrow release temperature
Because the material changes phase at a defined temperature, discharge stays close to that temperature, which suits preheating and domestic hot water circuits.
